As we hurtle towards the release of the Creators Update, I decided to take a look at the new OOBE (Out Of Box Experience) that users will see when installing the update.
The new OOBE has been a part of the Insider preview builds for some time now. It’s main feature is Cortana support, so you can use speech to go through setup which appears to be as much as a cool and useful feature as it is about accessibility. Along with Cortana setup seems more friendly and more straight forward , which I guess as these updates are only going to keep coming, and the OOBE is what most people see when updating, making it an easier and less stressful process makes sense. As for IT Pro’s and the like, I’m sure MDT will be updated to support the Creators Update and I’ll never see the OOBE more than three or four times.
Here’s a gallery of my experience running through the new OOBE along with some notes. These image were taken from a fresh install of build 15058.
The first screen you’ll see. Here you can see the changes to make the OOBE more accessible – a nice new feature.
My region was picked automatically – Cortana asks if it is correct.
Here’s where the speech broke for me, my network is in a sea of networks. I caved and just clicked the one I wanted. It appeared that Cortana would have gone down the list asking if each network was mine.
No updates appeared to install during this phase. I suspect due to it being a Preview.
Cortana didn’t seem to respond to any input here, I manually chose the appropriate option.
No Cortana interaction here, just good old fashioned typing.
Support for 2FA – Cortana talked about it and then sent me on my merry way.
Adding a PIN
Cortana getting her spot light. I’m noticing here that the screen resolution and aspect had changed, so I assuming drivers are being downloaded and installed in the background – nice to see.
Privacy settings.
The last step which Cortana is very happy to tell you about. This took around 10 minutes to complete all together.
My favourite screens.
On the desktop, driver installs required reboots, settings were syncing in the background, a painless experience.
