If you've installed a fresh install of Windows Server 2016/Windows 10 1607 recently, you may have experienced a problem when it tries to download and install updates from your local WSUS server - specifically, it doesn't, it gets stuck. You've tired rebooting, stopping the BITS and WU services, deleting %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution but nothing seems to work.
In this post, I'm going to walk through setting up a WSUS server from scratch on Windows Server 2012 R2. I will not be covering WSUS with System Center Configuration Manager, just a standalone WSUS installation.
f you've been managing a WSUS server for any length of time, you may have run into the well known MMC connection error by now. I started having more often after upgrading to Windows Server 2012 R2's WSUS but was able to quickly solve my issue. Later when setting up another 2012 R2 WSUS server I had the same issue but the same fix didn't work. Here's a small collection of resolutions to this common problem.
